What is the interview and selection process?
After our technical, design, and product committee reviews all of the applications submitted, a small number of students will be selected for phone or Skype semi-final interviews. After the semi-final interviews, finalist will then be selected, and Kleiner Perkins portfolio companies will reach out and schedule final interviews. If an offer is made, the terms of compensation and summer start and end dates will be negotiated directly between the student and the company. Upon acceptance of an offer, the student will become a Kleiner Perkins Fellow and will be invited to participate in all program activities.
Will I get to choose which companies I interview and ultimately will be a Fellow at?
Yes! All finalist candidate will nominate companies they would like their finalist applications sent to. From that point on, the companies will reach out to schedule final interviews. If an offer is made, the terms of compensation and summer start and end dates will be negotiated directly between the student and the company. Upon acceptance of an offer, the student will become a Kleiner Perkins Fellow and will be invited to participate in all program activities.
How do you define the role of a Product Manager?
We believe that a great product manager sits at the intersection of business, technology, and design. Product managers help define “what” to build, and engineers and designers define “how.”
How many Fellows will Kleiner Perkins accept?
We would like to offer a spot in our Fellows Program to every talented individual who applies, but we also want to ensure that Kleiner Perkins Fellows have the best possible experience during their time with our portfolio companies. Therefore, we are limiting the number of Fellows based on the few positions per participating company where Fellows can play an important role and benefit from high-quality mentorship. We anticipate having approximately 55 Engineering Fellows, 15 Design Fellows and 6 Product Fellows for 2019.
Is the Fellows Program paid?
Yes. Compensation will be very competitive and the terms are negotiated directly between the student and the portfolio company where he or she will be employed.
When does the program take place?
The start and end dates will be negotiated between the student and the startup, but all program-wide summer events will be held between mid June to early August to accommodate the schedules of students from various universities. Product Fellows will continue to have events throughout 2019-2020.
Where does the program take place?
Participating startups are located throughout the greater San Francisco Bay Area. As a Kleiner Perkins Fellow, you might find yourself working amid the towering skyscrapers of downtown San Francisco or among the technology parks of Silicon Valley.
Is housing relocation assistance provided?
We will provide relocation guidance, help your familiarize yourself with the area and connect you with other Fellows looking for housing, but Fellows will be responsible for their own housing costs.
Will I have an opportunity to interact with companies besides the one where I’ll be working?
Yes. Although Fellows will be working at one startup for the duration of the summer, the program is designed to provide you with many opportunities to meet people at other startups, at events hosted by Kleiner Perkins as well as events hosted by startups within our portfolio.
Can I apply for more than one type of program?
Yes, however applicants must meet the eligibility guidelines for all the programs that they apply for. You can only be accepted into one program.
What is the program’s commitment to inclusion and diversity?
We know that a diverse talent pool is not only fair but is key to achieving high performance in the marketplace for our firm as well as our portfolio companies. Underrepresentation of race and ethnicity is a significant issue, in addition to other aspects of diversity, and we continue to actively work to improve inclusion at our firm, within our portfolio and through our Fellows program. We are always looking to learn from the community, student clubs and organizations working to advance underrepresented communities in technology.
